Network Radio Up 10% In Flat Q1…

Network Radio grew 10% in a first quarter that was flat compared to the same period last year, according to a Nielsen Monitor-Plus  report just released.  The biggest jumps from Q1 one year ago besides Network Radio were made in National Sunday Supplements (19.2%), Cable TV (+12.9%) and African American TV (+12.9).   Network Radio?  Go figure!!!

Nielsen tracked 17 forms of media and did not include Internet advertising which grew by 14.7% from Q1 2007 to Q1 2008.  And what categories of advertisers coughed up the bucks?  Your top 5 would be:  Automotive, Pharmaceutical, Auto Dealerships, Restaurants and Telephones.  Total overall spending among the advertisers was slightly over $10 billion, about the same as last year’s Q1 total…

I looked at the Nielsen numbers and compared to the economy overall, I expected more of a media hit for a flat quarter.  The same amount of money in advertising was spent and while only 7 of 17 media tracked showed a gain, money spent by advertisers just moved to different media.  And how did Network Radio fare against Network TV?  Radio was up 10% while TV was down 3.4%.  Let’s hear it for a rare win for Radio…
