When you program a top 40 radio station, you want the 18-34 demo, ideally stretched out all the way to age 54 but what really makes you happy is the audience you get by default - teens. To begin with you’re playing their music in a contemporary setting. You’re talking to them. You’re their radio station. So the results of the “Youth Radio & New Media” study just announced by Paragon Media Strategies bodes well for the future if you’re one of those stations…
Among the 14-24 demo studied with a sample size of 409 respondents, TSL (time spent listening to radio), is up from the first such study done one year ago. It’s up to 37% from 28% year-to-year for radio listening of 1 to 3 hours a week. Those listening 4 to 6 hours weekly was steady at 21% and those listening 7 to 10 hours weekly went from 8% to 12%. In 2007, 73% of respondents listened to music from other sources - CDs, iPods, satellite radio and such more than they listen to FM radio. This year the “other than radio source” number is down to 59%…
Granted these numbers are a mere shadow of the teen numbers we used to see over 20 years ago but it’s a good sign to see a resurgence of teens listening to terrestrial radio. It also might prove that if you give them something to listen to, they’ll listen - CDs, iPods, satellite radio or not…
