Tagging Comes Of Age - Finally…

Radio gets a boost from Microsoft Zune which has the major radio groups over the moon (mune?).  It also helps radio close the gap in tagging which has been lagging behind TV, electronics and the rest of the free world.  Radio always seems to finish last in technology.  HD Radio was talked about years before it became a reality and by the time it did it may have been too little, too late.  I mean HD is an iBiquity trademark.  It doesn’t even mean ‘high definition’.  No wonder more than 450 radio stations belonging to Clear Channel, CBS, Beasley, Bonneville, Citadel, Cox Radio, Emmis, Entercom and Greater Media are as happy as a Jet fan rejoicing over Tom Brady’s misfortune now that Zune portable media players will be tagging all song titles with “Buy From FM”.  Songs can then be purchased and downloaded to a Zune immediately…

With the built-in FM radio, radio picks up listeners and Microsoft sells downloads.  You rub my back - I’ll rub yours.  And with songs guaranteed to be identified through tagging, record manufacturers gain something too - much needed sales…

One of the biggest complaints voiced by listeners for years was not identifying new songs by title and artist.  Now being on the other side of that I find myself getting upset when I hear something new but there’s no title or artist in the jock’s intro or backsell.  Those days are on their way to being over - finally…
