Proving once again that the folks who spend advertising money are smarter than the Wall Street crowd, a new economic study shows that dire predictions were made back in the spring. Before the current crisis was even hinted at, ad budgets were anticipated to shrink 33% over the next 6 months. This prediction was made in April/May. With the exception of online spending, slashes were expected in radio (33%), broadcast TV (30%), cable TV (20%), magazines (29%) and newspapers which will soon be solely used to wrap fish and doggie doo, was expected to implode a whopping 44% . Online was only expected to dip 4%…
This study - the Media Economy Report was conducted by Advertiser Perceptions Inc. Their spring 2008 data had a base of 1,811 advertising executives. According to TNS Media Intelligence, the U.S. ad economy slipped 1.6% in the first half of 2008, the second quarter alone dropped 3.7% and the first month of the third quarter declined even more…
Okay, now what? Well for one thing, Marc Goldstein of GroupM North America is predicting that many companies will not cut back on advertising in 2009, despite the troubled economic conditions. Of course his address was made at an Advertising Week Conference to people looking for a lift in spirits. But he also said this, “every marketer will be in for a ‘rocky road’.” It’s time to get out your hip boots and shovel…
