Radio Gets A ‘C’ On News & Information Report Card…

(Weekend Edition)

A new survey shows that Americans consider television and daily newspapers the most credible sources of news and information.  On a one-to-ten scale, TV pulled a 6.6, followed by daily newspapers (6.3), radio (6.0), online (5.6), weekly community papers (5.2), magazines (4.6) and free shoppers (3.5).  The national study of 1,005 adults was conducted by Opinion Research Corp. and sponsored by ARAnet, which provides content to newspapers and Web sites, including two-thirds of the nation’s top-100 daily newspapers.  They must also supply weekly community papers since they pulled a  credible 5.2 and free shoppers a fairly credible 3.5…

Based on this survey, radio not only is not the major source for news and information but it trails newspapers that publish their news and information after the fact while radio is an ongoing and instantaneous news and information source.   That’s one surprise and there’s another.  How come online finished just barely in front of weekly community papers and behind daily news papers?  I would think that online would be at least second to TV with radio third but I wasn’t being surveyed…

Survey respondents assigned credibility scores ranging from one for “not at all credible” to 10 for “extremely credible” to seven types of media.  The survey was conducted by phone (yeah!) September 4-7, 2008.  I’d like to see a credibility survey done on the people that deliver news and information next…
