The positive streaming numbers in Arbitron top ten PPM markets is not that surprising. Three-quarters (74.1%) of streamers listening to digital radio in-office is no surprise. The fact that 25-54 was the key demographic was not a surprise either. What was a surprise was that News/Talk and A/C music were the dominant formats in quarter hours. Okay, A/C music makes sense but News/Talk? Don’t you need earphones for that? In an office while you’re supposed to be doing your job? How come I never worked for anyone that allowed that? I always had a radio on but that’s easy to lower when talking to someone if you so choose. You can’t hear anything with ear plugs cranked up…
In-office AM/FM streaming vs. Satellite Radio is a no-brainer since there’s no cost for listening to AM, FM or Internet Radio. The same can be said for at-home streaming where you already own the computer which serves as a radio transmitter - no extra cost there either. It should be noted that Arbitron’s numbers come from the October PPM survey with 233 Internet streams of AM/FM radio stations credited with at least one quarter-hour of exposure among the more than 26,000 monthly in-tab respondents in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Washington D.C., Detroit and Riverside. The 233 encoded streams of AM/FM outlets in 10 core PPM markets account for 1% of total un-weighted quarter hours of listening Monday-Sunday 6am-midnight…
So what does it all mean? It means that if you have an AM/FM radio station you better be streaming if you want to stay in business…
