The clock is ticking on that deadline for the National Amusements $1.6 billion debt payback, half of which is due in mid-December. The terms of that debt are tied to the value of CBS and Viacom shares which are below where they closed on October 10th when National Amusements disclosed that it would sell shares in both companies to meet debt obligations. Peter Lauria of the New York Post reports that Wall Street is not sharing Sumner Redstone’s enthusiasm that debt negotiations are going smoothly. To paraphrase one of our former presidents, it depends on what your definition of ’smoothly’ is…
Redstone offered his latest bit of encouragement after CBS and Viacom shares tumbled sharply Wednesday. Evidently the street sipped Sumner’s Kool-Aid and CBS shares were up 6%, or 36 cents to $6.43. Viacom shares jumped more than 7% or $1.12 to $16.26. Wall Street is still jittery or as one analyst says “If Viacom and CBS shares fall to a certain level, whatever that level is, Redstone gets another margin call. All that takes is an institutional seller other than National Amusements to drive their stock prices down.” …
There was some good news for CBS Radio yesterday, since CBS took over online radio programming for AOL in June its cume audience has continued to grow from 1.9 million combined listeners in August to 2.3 million in September according to Arbitron ComScore. That’s number one for online listening. Yahoo’s cume dipped a bit from 1.2 million in August to 1.1 million in September. Clear Channel visitor traffic jumped 12% in October with more than 14 million unique visitors for third place. NPR, Citadel and Entercom were also up…
