Adults Spend More Time On The Internet Than Teens…
While Nielsen’s latest study of teens showed that radio was still the key source of music for 16 (%) percent and as a secondary source for another 21 (%) percent, it also showed that adults spend more time on the Internet than teens. The latter finding is a killer for radio, which doesn’t need teens to survive but does needs adults, especially those 25+. Not enough adult listeners will kill radio faster than you can say ‘YouTube’. The Nielsen study is also another warning to terrestrial radio that if your station is not streaming on the Internet, don’t bother to pay your next electric bill, you won’t need lights when your station goes dark…
Nielsen’s report states that adults 25-34 spend 35 (%) percent more time watching videos online than teens. Teen Internet usage averages 11 hours and 32 minutes a month. On the mobile side, adults trail teens in usage by about half. Teens spend 6 hours and 30 minutes a month using a mobile device. The popular website categories are similar for both teens and adults — search and portals. Both demographics frequent social networks like MySpace and Facebook…
Granted that Nielsen’s study was done for teens (”How Teens Use Media”) but terrestrial radio is not seeking teens, it seeks adults, primarily over 25. The industry would be better served with more research on adults than teens…
