High School Radio Station Defies FCC…

This is not what new FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski signed on for but like it or not he’s got it. In 2007, the FCC issued a $7,000 fine against an Indiana high school for operating a station (WJHS) without a proper license. You read right — a high school station.Who knew a high school station needed a license? Rather than having a brownie sale or car wash to raise money for the fine, Columbia City High School decided to fight the fine. No one ever accused Hoosiers of being pushovers. Whitley County Consolidated Schools business director Anthony Zickgraf says the station’s operator at the time didn’t properly file the license renewal. The station operator remains anonymous but I hope he or she ran for president of the student council…

It’s been two years since Columbia City High School appealed the FCC fine. Last week the school district received word that the FCC has rejected their appeal of the fine. Not backing down, Zickgraf says a second appeal is expected, arguing that the district doesn’t have other FCC violations and that it has limited funds available. This smells like an Oprah campaign to me…

The FCC can do one of two things about this high school fine but only one makes them look good. Either they drop or lower the fine or become the biggest joke of a government agency ever. BTW, the radio station broadcasts school board meetings, basketball and football games. What a threat to the community!!!
