Radio Analyst Projects 2% Growth For Radio In 2010…

After the dreadful year radio has had in 2009 it will gladly accept a 2% revenue increase when the clock strikes 12 on New Year’s Eve. Wells Fargo analyst Marci Ryviker predicts that the brief media rally appears to be over. That rally boosted radio stocks up 324% since March. Rally? Really? Am I the only one that didn’t know there was a rally? Marci would probably say that I was and would then follow by saying that the biggest growth moves are likely history until broadcasters start to exhibit top line growth. Marci sees a “relatively strong start to the holiday spending season and a more forgiving debt market.” She sees an uptick in the automotive business and a revenue growth of 2% next year. Outdoor will be flat and broadcast television should be up 4%…

While the revenue picture might be unsettled, radio listening is not. Broadcast radio reaches 79.2% of 18 to 34 year olds. Ninety percent of consumers listen to some form of audio media every day, according to a Nielsen analysis of a Council for Research Excellence media study. Broadcast radio is the dominant form of audio media at home with 46.4%, in car with 74.2% and at work with 53.8%. Compare those figures to what satellite radio reaches: 7.2% at home, 5.5% in car and 12.3% at work…

Focus 360 says “Radio has always been underutilized yet radio continues to deliver a targeted, engaged and very large audience.” So — no excuses for the radio programmers who have a problem tapping into that “very large audience” …
