The Local Community Radio Act Is Stuck In The Senate…

(Weekend Edition)

The Local Community Radio Act received unanimous bipartisan support in the House of Representatives on December 16th but since has been stuck in the Senate growing cobwebs. This is the bill that would give power to the people, well, low power anyway. Thousands of non-commercial low power FM stations are waiting to sprout like dandelions if and when the bill is enacted. The act must now be approved by the full Senate (S592) and then placed on the president’s desk for his signature this spring. More importantly, the bill still needs to be officially reported and filed, something that should take only days. The Prometheus Radio Project (Freeing the airwaves from corporate control) is not happy with the delay: “We wait for a full Senate vote, we are looking to the leadership of cosponsors Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) to move the bill forward.”…

Prometheus is determined to get the Local Community Radio Act approved. “We will not give in. We’ve seen grassroots supporters take action and make their voices heard, helping push the act out of the House of Representatives. We’re going to keep fighting and see this thing through to the end. S592 must be voted out of the Senate and signed by the president this year or thousands of community groups across the country will lose out on the opportunity to have low-power FM radio stations.”…

The group urges supporters to talk to friends and co-workers about the bill and contact senators to urge them to back the bill…
